Serama were introduced to the US in the year 2000 by an import by KJ Theodore. This was followed shortly by an import made by J. Schexnayder and then another by KJ Theodore. From that point, the path of the serama in this country took two distinct paths.
One group chose to develop the serama into a larger bird with some intention of making it more fit for the table. Leaders of this group have promoted crossbreeding to accomplish this goal. Even early in this path, the "Americanized" serama has become detached from its roots both in name and quality.
The more popular group, the US Serama Club, chose to keep close ties with the original Malaysian intent for the breed as a "Living Work of Art". This group chooses to keep its birds pure and work within the already diverse genepool the Malaysian Serama contains. These birds have become recognized as some of the best in the U.S. One such breeder is HCEF Serama. As a leader in the development of the true Malaysian Serama, they have produced birds that truly represent the "Art" of this wonderful breed.
If you choose to help develop this wonderful breed, we hope you choose to work only with pure Malaysian stocks and help preserve this wonderful little fowl. Loosing it to crossbreeding and misguidance would be more than unfortunate, comparable to loosing a priceless work of art.
